How might we children learn English in a fun and sensory way through colors?

Color Game is a kids’ English learning app that uses Larva characters to help children intuitively associate words with colors through playful interaction.

As the sole UX designer, I led the entire design process including UI, GUI, motion design, and system development in collaboration with TUBA N at Eda Communications.

Although the app was fully developed, it was not released due to changes in the client’s service policy.

Context

Transforming passive memorization into playful, sensory learning

Most kids’ English apps are designed around word memorization, which often fail to sustain children’s attention and interest.

Color Game was developed to create a more engaging learning experience based on an Exploratory Learning Flow, where play and learning occur naturally through sensory interaction.

By incorporating familiar Larva characters, the app reduces tension and increases comfort in the learning process.


Facial expressions, motion, and sound provide emotional feedback that keeps children immersed, addressing issues of boredom and low concentration while turning study into a playful and visually enjoyable experience.

Insight

Turning learning into playing through senses

Children aged 5 to 9 respond more quickly to sensory cues such as color, sound and motion than to text-based information.


Studies show that these multisensory experiences enhance learning engagement and improve memory retention. Drawing on Dual Coding Theory and Play Based Learning, this project explores how children can learn through rhythmic and sensory interaction rather than rote memorization.

Color Game combines vision, sound and motion into a cyclical flow of exploration, response and retention, turning study into a naturally engaging experience.

Building on these insights, Color Game defines its UX strategy around three core pillars that promote learning immersion. Color, Interaction, and Feedback each represent visual recognition, rhythmic engagement, and emotional reinforcement.


Together, they create an experience where children simultaneously achieve Fun and Study, learning naturally through sensory-driven play.

Design Guide

The color palette was provided by the client, and variations were created within the defined scheme to maintain visual harmony.


The font ARCO was selected for its rounded, bold form that reflects the friendly personality of the Larva characters and ensures a cohesive tone and manner across the interface.


Design

The overall design combines color, character, and motion to create a cohesive visual rhythm that encourages children to explore and react naturally. Each element was structured to maintain a unified interaction flow, enhancing immersion and continuity throughout the learning process.


The GUI was designed to deliver a consistent tone across screens, balancing playfulness with clarity for intuitive navigation.

Through this approach, the interface ensures that every interaction feels connected and supports the learning rhythm central to Color Game.

Home

The home screen was designed to express the identity of Color Game through a guided color system and card style UI.


The Larva character at the center adds friendliness and encourages children to explore naturally. A short entrance animation inspired by a circus stage introduces the app as a playful space for learning. Each feature is shown as a separate card for clarity and focus, while locked menus use icons to show learning progress.

Level Select

The level select screen uses lively character motions that make each choice feel playful and engaging.


Children can enjoy the process of choosing a level while staying immersed in the experience. Each character reacts with expressive movements, turning a simple selection into an act of participation rather than a click.

Play

The play screen minimizes text to let children learn through visual and auditory cues.

By tapping colors that match the spoken word, they can confirm their answers instantly and stay engaged. Animation effects reinforce correct responses, helping children associate words and colors through a fun multisensory experience.

Reward Moment

When children answer correctly or clear a level, a celebratory animation delivers a sense of achievement.


This visual feedback turns success into part of play, strengthening motivation and emotional reward. The structure encourages natural engagement and keeps children eager to continue learning.

Reflection

This project explored what makes learning enjoyable from a child’s perspective. I focused on finding balance between visual delight and cognitive clarity.

As a designer, it allowed me to move beyond sensory expression and experiment with new visual languages that connect play and learning.

Although it was one of the most enjoyable projects I worked on, it left some regret as it was never released.
